Without any modifiers, EVs are gained 1, 2, or 3 at a time, depending on the Pokemon you battle. There are a plethora of in-game trainers and wild Pokemon to battle throughout your adventure. Training an in-game Pokemon to have competitive EVs, however, is much more time consuming than typing a number into a text box on a simulator.
